Introduction to the exercise and its purpose:
This exercise is designed to perfect the “Show, Don't Tell” technique by describing a simple evening walk without making the character's emotions explicit. The goal is to convey peace, reflection and beauty through sensory details and observations of the environment.
Situation:
Julia decides to take a walk in her neighborhood at sunset, observing the cityscape and the small details she misses during the day.
Writing Exercise:
Recount the moments of Giulia's walk, focusing on her observations and interactions with the environment, showing her serenity and contemplation through visual and sensory details.
Suggestions and exercise development:
Describe the sky at sunset, the colors fading from pink to orange, and the slight drop in temperature. Illustrate how Julia walks slowly, observing closed store windows, flowers in the gardens of houses, and children playing in the distance. Show how she stops to smell a flower, listens to birdsong, and smiles as she sees a cat stretching lazily on the sidewalk. Conclude with Julia sitting on a bench, breathing deeply and enjoying the quiet moment.
