From the scenic road, the Gulf of Raton appeared like a loving embrace, a declaration that the land expressed to the sea by attempting to squeeze it into its shoreline. The ribbon of asphalt cut the wilderness in two: the olive and pine trees above, the scrub below blurred among the rocks that tumbled into the white foam of the water. That spot on the cliff would have been the perfect place to ask Mary to be my bride. Or to kill her.
