Serhij Rutinov showed his clenched fists by stretching his arms out in front of him, “Choose,” he ordered the seated and handcuffed man, “Right or left?”
The one remained silent for a moment, as if he did not understand. He stared at the face of the fellow captain, at the steppe behind him, at the soldiers waiting silently with their rifles drawn.
“Choose, I said!” repeated Serhji.
“The right hand,” whispered the man.
Black stone. They both knew what it meant.
“Serhji, my son. Wait...”
“Execute,” ordered the fellow captain.
