Exercise: Writing Non-Human Perspectives

A large, ancient oak tree stands at the center of a bustling urban park, under which various people, including a young couple arguing, an old man reminiscing, and children playing, engage in everyday activities, set against a backdrop of modern city life.

Introduction: This exercise invites you to step out of the human perspective and explore narrative storytelling through the eyes of a non-human entity. This could be an animal, an inanimate object, or even a natural element like a tree or a river. Writing from such perspectives not only challenges your creative boundaries but also enhances your ability to imagine and empathize with 'otherness,' a skill valuable in all forms of creative writing.

Situation: Imagine a bustling urban park from the perspective of an old oak tree that has stood in the same spot for centuries. The tree has witnessed generations of human activities and changes in the urban landscape. Now, in a single day, it observes a series of small but significant events: a young couple arguing under its branches, an old man reminiscing in its shade, and children playing around its trunk.

Writing Exercise: Narrate the day's events from the tree’s perspective, focusing on how it perceives these interactions. Reflect on the passage of time and the tree's role as a silent observer and keeper of secrets.

Suggestions and Development:

  • Use sensory details that a tree might notice, such as the feel of the wind, the warmth of the sun, and the vibrations of the earth.

  • Personify the tree to some extent, giving it emotions and thoughts that align with its nature-based existence.

  • Explore themes of continuity and change, memory, and the interconnectivity of life.

  • Convey a deep sense of time and history through the tree’s reflections on the transient nature of human lives compared to its own longevity.
